DESIGN OFFICE : KIM GORDON IN COLLABORATION WITH FEEDING TUBE RECORDS AT GAGOSIAN GALLERY
“LIVING ON THE EDGE OF OBSCURITY”
CO-CURATED WITH KIM GORDON AND BEN LEE RITCHIE HANDLER
GAGOSIAN GALLERY BOOTH, LA ART BOOK FAIR, LOS ANGELES
FEBRUARY 11-14, 2016
Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce the fourth of its annual project spaces at this year's edition of Printed Matter's LA Art Book Fair: Design Office: Kim Gordon in collaboration with Feeding Tube Records: “Living on the Edge of Obscurity.”
The legendary record store Feeding Tube Records is a petri dish of pop-culture pathology. Its resistance to the status quo is iconic—the storefront moved from its first location near the main drag in Florence, Massachusetts, when it attracted too much undiscerning foot traffic. In celebration of the righteously avant-garde, Kim Gordon and Feeding Tube Records are distilling the essence of the shop and releasing it at the LA Art Book Fair. The gallery booth will contain thirty unique record covers by artists including Rita Ackermann, Jacob Kassay, Laura Owens, Richard Prince, and Jim Shaw. Each dynamic cover has been made to accompany a twelve-inch vinyl record by Body/Head (Gordon and Bill Nace), pressed and released on the occasion of the fair. In addition to a listening station, the booth will include top-shelf items selected from Feeding Tube's inventory.
When Gordon and Byron Coley, founder and owner of Feeding Tube Records, sent their daughters to work at the store for a summer, they expected them to emerge with an expanded knowledge of counterculture, a greater appreciation for rare vinyl, and a stronger work ethic; instead, several gigabytes of selfies appeared on the store's computer hard drive. To commemorate the efforts of their progeny, Gordon and Coley decided to pair each of the 558 selfies with important birthdays and dates in counterculture, art, and feminist history, resulting in a 558 page-a-day calendar that spans the period February 29, 2016, to September 8, 2017.
To mark the book fair installation, Gagosian and Feeding Tube Records are publishing this calendar in an edition of 558.
